RichiH/vcsh
-
Excerpt: "vcsh allows you to maintain several Git repositories in one single directory. They all maintain their working trees without clobbering each other or interfering otherwise. By default, all Git repositories maintained via vcsh store the actual files in $HOME but you can override this setting if you want to."

Color me impressed
-
Excerpt: "In the late 70s, the number of character-oriented terminals was rapidly expanding. Of course there was no "de jure" standard and each manufacturer handled their escape sequences differently. That meant that every screen-handling program had to be written for one (type of) terminal only. To deal with these incompatibilities, Bill Joy foresightedly created the termcap library (terminal capabilities), mainly to make his legendary vi editor more portable. This also allowed others to write screen-oriented applications not dependent on one particular terminal. Brilliant idea, which was over time gradually pushed out by terminfo implementing the same principle with several improvements. Later, even more abstract libraries like curses emerged, using termcap or terminfo under the hood." (via

rcm, an rc file manager
-
Excerpt: "We have built a suite of tools for managing your rc files. The rcm suite of tools is for managing dotfiles directories. This is a directory containing all the .*rc files in your home directory (.zshrc, .vimrc, and so on). These files have gone by many names in history, such as "rc files" because they typically end in rc or "dotfiles" because they begin with a period. Creative, I know. It's a unification of the existing shell scripts, make targets, rake tasks, GNU Bash constructions, and Python hacks that people copy and paste into their dotfiles repo, with a classical unix flair."

Linux ADS-B Decoding and gqrx Software Defined Radio
-
Excerpt: "SDR (Software Defined Radio) is a system whereby components of a radio that are normally implemented with physical hardware (modulators/demodulators amplifiers etc..) are instead implemented by means of software running on a computer. A simple and cheap way of creating a SDR is to use a DVB-T dongle. DVB-T dongles that are based on the Realtek RTL2832U chip can be used. These dongles can then be used to receive and decode a very wide range of frequencies. In the example below we will install "gqrx" which is a SDR front end "dump1090" which is used for processing ADS-B aircraft signals."

The Woodnotes Guide to the Mutt Email Client
-
Excerpt: "Writing, reading, and sending email is most satisfying when the tools you use facilitate your work. And Mutt will help you do just that. Mutt is a console mail user agent (MUA). It is not graphical, and makes no use of the mouse. Rather, it runs from the command prompt, so you can use it on consoles where the X Window environment is not running, in virtual terminals, and in remote shell sessions. It has no buttons, sliders, or icons: it's text based. Mutt doesn't do some things you might be used to, but it does several things you never knew were possible and it does them well. It's lean and mean, and once you learn how to make mutt work for you it's hard to use anything else without feeling like the software impedes your efficiency."

Why I never close Emacs
-
Excerpt: "I once complained to my friend of his desktop on his computer. His desktop was a tangled mess of icons. "It's easier this way.", he chuckled, "I can quickly find all the softwares I need.". I showed him my desktop which was spick and span."Doesn't it consumes time in finding the softwares you need?", he asked. I told him I have all the softwares I need on my desktop. His eyes rolled down my screen until they stumbled upon a solo icon of emacs. "You just use one software?", he asked."Mostly, yes", I said. "What about *editing*, *browsing*, *music*, etc?", he asked. "I do it all in emacs.", I quipped. Before he raised his eyebrows, I explained to him why emacs is informally called as a complete operating system and why I never close emacs."

DoomRL - Doom, the Roguelike
-
